NT - The Outback

The Northern Territory is perhaps the most unique place in Australia. Despite it's large landmass of almost 1.5 million square kilometers, it is sparsely populated with only around 220,000 people. People both local and from abroad cherish 'The Territory" for its isolation, diversity and sheer beauty.

Home to many Aboriginal tribes, this is a spiritual center for most, one of ancient history and respected tradition. Encounter the warmth and friendliness of the locals and experience the 'real' Australia.

The principal places of interest are:

Darwin, Kakadu, Tennant Creek,Katherine, Alice Springs and Uluru

Darwin:
Awesome thunder storms (October to April), Beach sunset markets (May to October), Gateway to Tiwi Islands, Enjoy the clear swimming holes, amazing termite mounds and rainforest bushwalks of Litchfield National Park, Aim to catch 100 barramundi a day in some of the best fishing spots in Australia
Kakadu:
Birthplace of the quirky musical instrument, The Didjeridu. Home to incredible aboriginal rock art, crashing waterfalls and great for bush walks and bird watching. It is at its most spectacular during the Monsoon season (Jan-Apr)
Tennant Creek:
Renown for its unusual rock formations such as the Devils Marbles as well for its abundance of gold. It was a leading gold mining town in the past and some gold mining continues even now. The town also boasts an excellent Aboriginal Art & Cultural Center
Katherine:
3 hours south of Darwin, this where the tropics meet the desert and people of all sorts connect. In the Nitmiluk National Park 30km from the town, is the world famous Katherine Gorge, which is actually composed of 13 separate gorges. To the south are amazing hot springs at around 34 degrees celsius.
Alice Springs and Uluru:
Alice Springs is a quirky town where camels race and the rivers run dry! Nestled between the East and West MacDonnell Ranges it is the hometown of one of Australia's finest Aborignal artists, Albert Namatjira. Uluru (Ayers Rock) stands at 348m tall, and like an iceberg, has most of its mass underground.
